Application Development that has helped automate a system and reduce administration time for a company
Premise:
You run a business, part of your product line is a particular set of products that incur a regular monthly fee from a wholesale provider, which you must pay to the provider periodically and then invoice your clients for the products plus any usage components, also periodically.
The details of these products, their usage component and your cost amount are sent to you monthly via email in a document. You must then manually reconcile the records in this document against your customer records and invoice them accordingly. You now have hundreds, maybe thousands, of customers and it's starting to become a week long chore to perform the "billing run".

Premise:
Your company provides a sales service to customers and you keep the records of the sales, commissions, packages purchased and the date they were purchased in flat files, one for each month.
